The Tongarewa International Scholarship celebrate Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington’s commitment to our international student community. We award a range of these scholarships to new international students each year. Victoria University of Wellington offers a partial fee-based scholarship to outstanding new international students starting their first year of undergraduate or postgraduate study. This scholarship covers part of the tuition fees for one academic year and is awarded based on academic excellence in a competitive selection process. It supports studies beginning the year after the application and directly reduces the recipient’s tuition costs.

Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be international students paying full international fees
- Hold an unconditional or conditional Offer of Place for an eligible program at Victoria University of Wellington
- Be new students to Victoria University of Wellington
Ineligibility
The scholarship is not available to:
- Students who completed secondary education at a New Zealand school
- Students who completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Victoria University of Wellington Foundation Studies program
- Study Abroad, Exchange, or Twinning students from partner universities
- Students in their second trimester or year of study in the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington
Required Documents
To apply for the Tongarewa International Scholarship, students must submit the following documents as part of their online application:
- A personal statement (up to 500 words) outlining their motivation for studying at Victoria University of Wellington, academic objectives, and reasons why they deserve the scholarship. This statement should also highlight any leadership roles and community involvement.
- An Offer of Place or Conditional Offer of Place for an eligible program at Victoria University of Wellington. If document is not upload the application will be reject.
Selection Process
University selects scholarship recipients through a competitive process that considers both academic merit and the strength of the personal statement.. A panel consisting of Victoria University of Wellington International staff will review applications and select the recipients.
Award Details
The scholarship amounts range from $2,500 to $10,000, which will be credited to the student’s account within two week of admission. Students must pay their tuition fees in full upfront and cannot deduct the scholarship amount from these fees.
Regulations and Conditions
- Applicants must complete and submit the online application by the closing date (4:30 pm).
- The university will not accept late or incomplete applications.
- Applicants must also ensure all supporting documents arrive by the deadline.
- To receive the scholarship, the selected student must enroll in a full-year program (at least 45 points) that meets the specified criteria and duration.
- Recipients may request approval to defer the scholarship to another intake within the same calendar year but cannot defer to a later year.
- The university reserves the right to modify the terms and conditions of the scholarship in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate.
